Unsolved Mysteries of Webdesign #7856

Monday, October 6th, 2008

“A website will work perfectly well while being tested but will throw a wobbly upon going live.”

Despite valiant efforts, researchers are still in the dark with regard to this potent mystery. Some hold that it may have something to do with the Bermuda Triangle or perhaps it may have links to the configuration of the Great Pyramids.

Where’s Charles Fort when you need him?

Letting Go

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Sometimes it’s hard to let go of a website. You keep asking for little changes here, a few tweaks there when really these kind of things can be done once a site has gone live. We know. We understand. We’ve been there.

But there comes a time when in order for a website to grow and blossom you just have to let it go. Let it run free outside in the glow of the internet.

And pay us the final instalment. ;-)

What have they done?

If there is a prize for how many moving things you can have on one page then the website of our local cinema stands a very good chance of winning. Now, the website has always been a bit rubbish (and quite difficult to find even though you know it exists) but I was horrified to discover the latest redesign. Yuck! It actually makes me feel a bit sick if I stare at it for too long.

Feeling pleased with myself

Over the last few years I’ve had several unsuccessful attempts at learning PHP. I usually get part way through a book and lose momentum, which results in several books on my shelf with bookmarks sticking out about halfway through. I’m therefore feeling very smug that I’ve just finished a book - the very snapplily titled Build Your Own Database Drive Website Using PHP and MySQL by Kevin Yank.

It was an excellent introduction to PHP and MySQL, getting straight into using practical examples. Just the right level for me so, even though I don’t think I’m going to immediately throw together my own WordPress equivalent, I do feel like I understood what was going on and stand a fighting chance of being able to use some of it. Have set myself a small project to see what I can do.

Ecommerce for Wordpress

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Whilst researching options for a potential project last week I came across this plugin for Wordpress: WP e-Commerce. Have to say that after a quick trial I’m pretty impressed with it - it’s very simple to install and set up (not often that things just work!). I don’t think I’d use it for a full-on ecommerce site, but if you want to add an ecommerce aspect to a small site it could be a nice simple solution.
