On a roll

Friday, August 8th, 2008

I’m definitely on a roll with my sci-fi. In the week we got Sunshine out of the library. It’s directed by Danny Boyle who also made 28 Days Later, which I absolutely love. Possibly one of my favourite films ever.

So, I was really keen to see Sunshine. It’s about a bunch of astronauts and scientists on a mission to kick-start the sun. Has a bit of an apocalyptic element to it in that if they didn’t succeed then humankind would be wiped out. I love a bit of end of the world stuff :-) It was a really interesting film - good storyline, great acting (I’m becoming quite a fan of Cillian Murphy) and fantastic music. I’ve even watched the version with Danny Boyle giving a commentary which was very enjoyable - his enthusiasm really came across. I must get hold of a copy for our DVD collection (hint, hint).

Another batch of sci-fi

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Really enjoying watching a few films again. I’m definitely going through a sci-fi phase at the moment. Have been watching I, Robot, Blade Runner and The Island.

Apart from some jolly good entertainment there are some interesting ideas there - I, Robot and Blade Runner both have a ‘what if robots get too clever’ kind of theme. I, Robot has a robot that has been developed to have emotions and dreams. It’s actually quite a disturbing thought having a machine behave in such a ‘human’ way. The robots in Blade Runner (replicants) are very human and also have emotions. One of them has been implanted with memories and doesn’t at first know that she’s not human.

The Island has clones rather than robots, but they have also been implanted with memories - the idea being to keep them content. The trouble arises here when one of them also has inherited some memories from the person he was cloned from and starts questioning things too much.

So where are we headed? In a few years will we be living in a world side by side with human-like robots? Or will we be growing clones to make sure that we’ve got a handy supply of organs in case something goes wrong?

Getting back into my DVDs

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

I’ve not been feeling like watching many DVDs recently because the sitting room has just been a big pile of boxes. However, we now have our sitting room back (yay!) so I’m getting back into watching things in the evening. It helps that I’ve got a bit of knitting to do for the Flying Squirrel Craft Shop, so I’m settling down in the evening with my knitting and a DVD. Glamorous lifestyle, eh?

I started off with The Fifth Element which I haven’t watched for ages. Nothing like a good bit of easy-on-the-brain entertainment. This is a sci-fi with Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich and Gary Oldman. I’ve got a bit of a soft spot form Gary Oldman because my friend Natalie was absolutely obsessed with him when we were at college - ah, the good old days. Funny how it’s rubbed off on me a bit.

It’s a really fun film with a good bit of action, some fantastic costumes and not terrible acting. Definitely one to relax to of an evening.
