Phone call security

What is it with customer service phone calls from large companies these days? I’ve just received a call from our broadband supplier, Pipex, and the first thing I was asked was to give my full name and address as proof of identity. If I had phoned them I would have willingly supplied some info for security but as they phoned me I think it’s absolutely outrageous to be asked for info. How am I supposed to know that the person on the other end of the phone is really who they say they are? I could be handing over my personal data to anyone!

This reminds me of a dodgy call we had from Lloyds TSB a few weeks back. It consisted of a recorded message telling us that it was Lloyds TSB and to press 1 to continue (or something along those lines). I naturally hung up at that point and phoned Lloyds to see if they were trying to contact us, thinking it was probably a scam. Turns out it was genuine - what a crazy way to phone customers! If I’d pressed 1 to continue the first thing that would have happened was them asking me some security questions… Impressed? Not very…
