Cornish Round Up
About time one of us gave a quick round up of what we’ve been up to on the moving to Cornwall side of things (seeing as it’s part of the main gist for this blog!).
We spent the most part of last week down in St. Just trying to get the ball rolling on a couple of fronts, namely checking out a potential accountant for the web design business and finding somewhere to live. Quite important that last one really.
About a month ago Emily sent out a bunch of letters to a range of accountancy firms in Cornwall and for the first meeting we decided to go with the most positive response we had. This turned out to be a rather large firm in Truro which was a bit daunting but the meeting went well with Emily doing most of the talking so that I could sit back and make crucial observations about the accountant’s body language, etc. Or at least that was what I said I was doing (to Emily not the accountant).
We got loads of good information and advice but (not surprisingly) came away with the firm feeling that although this firm would be a really good choice they thought we’d be making a mistake if we based ourselves any further west than Camborne or so.
Not quite what we wanted to hear. Our next meeting (when we go down next) with an accountant will be with a firm based in Penzance - I’m wondering whether this firm will think that we’ll be making a mistake if we move to somewhere east of Camborne!
On to house hunting then.
My sister Chris has been keeping her eye on a property in St. Just which not only has a shop front but also has a huge living area. Having looked around the place a couple of times (initially just out of nosiness!) we realised that it could be ideal for all of us: Chris is looking to set up an arts and crafts shop and we’re looking for somewhere to rent/buy.
Thinking that pooling our ‘resources’ (in the loosest sense of the word) could make us sound like a viable proposition to the bank/mortgage people, reality crashed down upon us in the form of a couple of meetings where we were met with laments of it being too much money and way too complicated. I’ve obviously cut this short and exaggerated a bit in an attempt to make this interesting, but it really made me wonder how do people set up their businesses in the first place??

Once you are west of Exeter, I can’t personnally see it making any odds how far west you are… The real issue are going to be:
1) Access to transport links for client meetings
2) Access to broadband
If you have both of those it shouldn’t matter if you set up camp in the western-most corner of the Last Labyrinth.

Well, that’s pretty much what we thought!
I think St. Just has access to broadband so I’d be surprised if that doesn’t go for the rest of West Penwith as well.
Transport links could be the catch though. We won’t (not at first anyway) have a car so we don’t want to cut ourselves off completely so Morgawr (sp?) is safe in the Last Labyrinth for now.
(By the way I think that’s the name of the monster they have in the labyrinth at Land’s End or used to anyway!)
